What Companies are saying about the VTI program:

The Virginia Technology Internship program is a great way for high school students to get hands-on experience with technology in a business setting. The most important thing a student learns through their internship is the personal interactions that IT individuals have with the business. At Interbake Foods, we teach our intern about manufacturing, we talk about technology's role in the manufacturing process, and we put our intern directly in front of the business. In addition to writing code, the intern faces the reality of setting up meetings, having concise phone conversations, setting and making goals, and giving presentations. It is very important to hone their "soft skills", and this opportunity helps them do that.

This year, our intern developed a corporate intranet using open source tools. The implementation of this project will allow Interbake Foods to save approximately $20K in software licensing. We have been very pleased with our return on investment!”

The Virginia Technology Intern Program has been a wonderful experience for Dominion Digital. As a relatively small company, we weren't sure how to get involved at first, but with a little creativity and a supportive team, we've had two incredible summers. Our interns were intelligent, motivated, forward thinking and resourceful. It's quite possible that we've learned more from them than they've learned from us! I highly recommend that other companies in the area get involved, it's amazing to work with such talented future technologists.

What students have to say about VTI:

Information technology has been a growing interest of mine since I was a freshman in high school. I was enrolled in the Center of Information Technology (CIT) at Deep Run High School, and it was there that I started to build my foundation. Through my mentor and friend Keith Warman, President of Computer Resource Team Inc (CRT), I found a great internship program.

At CRT, I acquired many valuable skills, such as web development and backend database language. I learned how to take an architectural standpoint and implement realistic solutions to modern day problems. One project that was assigned to me was to create and maintain an online timecard system for CRT.

I had the opportunity to meet Scott McKay, CIO of Genworth Financials. I helped him establish an internship program at Genworth Financials by sharing my insight about my internship and what was being taught at CIT.

I later advanced to a mentoring role for an intern. It was a rewarding but challenging leadership opportunity. I would create assignments, instruct lessons, and assess the intern's progress. The experience was similar to managing a team project.

During my time at CRT, Mr. Warman introduced me to Lyn McDermid, CIO of Dominion Power. Soon thereafter, I was presented with an internship at Dominion Power. This internship exposed me to a different and exciting environment that I was unfamiliar with. I was now acquainted with a large corporation and new responsibilities that included working in a team, meeting deadlines, following requirements, attending meetings and much more.

Prior to graduating Virginia Tech, I was offered a full time position at Dominion Power. I am proud to be a part of this company. Striving to learn more and networking have assisted me to excel in my career.

- Laith Al-Samir, Dominion Power
